I've been wanting to try my hand at "proper" hand lettering for a while - I often get complimented on my handwriting but when it comes to lettering for journalling or cards I'm never quite as happy with the outcome as I hope to be. So when the lovely folks at Quarto Publishing got in touch with their Autumn catalogue I was thrilled to see how many titles they had on the subject.

Hand Lettering A to Z by Abbey Sy is a gorgeous place to start. Abbey's instagram is absolutely lush (follow here here) and I particularly love her Bangkok photos as we've just returned from there, so I was super excited to be able to have a look at her book.

The book takes you through a range of hand drawn fonts, plus has additional chapters on embellishments and a gorgeous gallery of inspiration.

See how beautiful? So exciting. I was so excited, in fact, that I totally ignored her advice to get a sharp pencil and a proper table to work at. 'I can do this in front of Netflix can't I?' I thought. The answer? Well... you can decide for yourself...

That said, I had great fun playing with my new calligraphy pens (I haven't owned a proper calligraphy pen since I was about 11 years old - I also bought some proper fountain pens, but they completely defeated me, see earlier references to impatience). The instructions were easy to follow and there are loads of different styles to try. After about an hour I felt I had at least some idea of how to go about creating beautiful hand lettering even if I hadn't actually got the skills yet. I've bought myself a helicopter pencil and I'll definitely be returning to this book again and again - and of course I'll be sharing my successes (and failures) with you!

This one was taken at the gate to Mdina, where the first season of Game of Thrones was filmed. I didn't realise at the time that Luke was being silly behind me!
I used the Mr Huey double yellow mist from the latest Like For Ever kit to make a sunny background, and stitched sunbeams using the yellow ombre thread from the mixed media add-on.
The ephemera was from last month's "In Bloom" kit, but I thought it was so lovely and bright it matched perfectly - I've been dying to use those feathers on something lovely!
I punched the butterflies out of white paper stock and floded them in the middle to make them look like they are coming off the page.
Under the photo I layered several different papers and added some ephemera. I'm really pleased with how it's come out - especially as I wasn't sure about making a layout on coloured paper background, I was definitely pushing myself out of my comfort zone!
I think it's my favourite so far. The papers are from Elle's Studio Sunny Days and Fancy Pants' Millie & June and Life is Beautiful collections. Both sides are gorgeous - for the first time I wish I'd ordered the extra paper pack.
What I DID order was the mixed media add-on which had a fabulous stitching template and some lovely ombre silk thread. I also got the stamping add-on which was a gorgeous collection of tiny stamps by Lia Griffith. I love Lia's website and I intend to make lots of her crepe flowers to decorate my wedding venue next year.
The ephemera this month is Fancy Pants' Life in Beautiful. Technically I think it's Spring themed, but as Summer this year has been non-existent and there's been plenty of April showers in July I think that's perfect! I particularly love the bicycles and balloons, and the florals are really strong in this collection, too.
You might have spotted the Mr Huey's mist in the box picture above - we also received a Heidi Swapp template with lots of little hearts. I'm not very good at using it yet but I'm going to do some more practising this week. I'm hoping it will also work with my watercolours... and perhaps I'll be able to do a kind of ombre effect.... hmmm.....
Finally, there was a cute washi tape with hearts and some dark blue puffy alphas. I didn't think I liked the alphas at first because normally I just use tall and thin, very simple block letters, but I used them on a layout this week and actually they look great.
A super-cute small layout for my summer album to share with you today. I used the Like For Ever "In Bloom" kit, with a dab sticker from Simple Stories' "You Are Here" collection. The photo was taken from a lovely cocktail bar we found down on the Valletta waterfront. I think I'm definitely getting better at layering papers!

Wow! I can't believe there was a gap of almost three months between my last post and the one before it. Today I wanted to share with you this really simple card made with Like For Ever's "In Bloom" kit. I used four layered squares of paper from the kit, and then added this cute typewriter from the ephemera, stuck down with a foam sticky pad to give it a 3D feel.

And a Like For Ever photo layoutA colleague of mine (in my real job) mentioned the other day that she hadn't seen me blog for a while - ironically because I've been so busy making lots of beautiful things! But she was right - I should share them with you, particularly as I've recently subscribed to the Like For Ever kit club.

Here's a cute 12 x 12 layout I made with last month's "In Bloom" kit - my third with them. The kit included lots of gorgeous bits from Illustrated Faith, My Mind's Eye and Simple Stories. I really loved the ephemera this month - it was from Simple Stories' Carpe Diem collection - and also the Illustrated Faith enamel hearts.

There were also some Bella Boulevard bold and beautiful alphas but I didn't actually use any of those at all - in fact I didn't use as much of the kit as I hoped, I still need to curb my hoarding instinct and just use the papers! I've made much more with this month's kit, however, as you'll see in blog posts over the next week, so hopefully I'll have time to revisit In Bloom - I certainly have enough photos following our recent lovely holiday in Malta.
I was so excited to get my first Glittery Hands Box! This was a project that I backed on Kickstarter a few months ago and I'm so glad to see it come off. The box had a great mermaid theme, which was very different to other craft boxes I've seen recently, and I particularly loved the shell ephemera - particularly the "100% mermaid" cutout. I'm also looking forward to playing with the anchor stamp and I've been adding the lilac paint to all sorts of bits of scrap paper to use in my next layout. I've got some ideas for projects I want to make with the contents which I'll share with you soon, but for now, take a look at this unboxing video to see what I got.

I was so excited to pick up these gorgeous goodies from Hey Little Magpie. I'll be using them to make my friend's little girl a birthday card, and to start filling my Spring Project Life album (I'm waaaaaay behind schedule - SUCH printer woes!). I really love the My Mind's Eye On Trend 2 collection - it was really hard to stop myself buying all of it and I'd still like to get the decorative brads and the wood veneers...

Hi guys - I wanted to share this quick flip through of the mini album I made with pictures from our recent trip to Oxford. I took so many pictures in the city and at the Cotswold Wildlife Park on the way home that I'm not quite sure what to do with them all - the giraffe pic I scrapbooked and shared last week was one, and some will go into my Spring Project Life album too. I used a whole mix of papers and embellishments by Maggie Holmes, Heidi Swapp, Dear Lizzy & Docrafts - here are some more close-up pics:
I wanted to share with you this quick layout I did after my fiancée
and I visited the Cotswold Wildlife Park a few weeks ago. I had ordered the
Maggie Holmes Confetti ephemera collection months ago and while I loved the
vellum giraffe I was at a bit of a loss over what to actually do with it. Then
when we met this adorable young giraffe who was out and about enjoying a rare
sunny Spring day, it seemed like fate that they should meet!

The backing paper is just some plain grey cardstock I had in
a box, with the fab ombre chevrons from a Docrafts paper pack I picked up at
The Range. Then I used Heidi Swapp September Skies papers for the layering and
a 3x4 Project Life card I had in my stash – I have absolutely no idea who the
designer is but I have loads of these and they’re adorable.

Hi folks - here's the latest in my sporadic series of craft news pieces and features. The Guardian had a lovely piece last month about macrame superstar Emily Katz, which you can read by clicking here, and another about how craft isn't just a "nice activity" for people to do - it can make a real difference to lives. Read it on their Culture Professionals Network here.

Female First revealed the results of a survey which suggested 52% of people like to sit at home and do some crafting after a stressful day (although I'm fairly sure there was some bias, as the survey was carried out by craft TV channel Hochanda).

And scrapbooking fans will enjoy this article in Time magazine about a WWII sailor's scrapbook from the war - read it by clicking here.Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00962919061747463561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749674380302514413.post-49981201563083562802016-04-04T11:07:00.001+01:002016-04-04T11:07:40.252+01:00Watercolours and stamping!

Oh I'm having so much fun playing with my new watercolour brushes! I've been mixing painted backgrounds with stamps - I plan to get some card and make my own journaling cards for my Spring album, which I really look forward to sharing with you!Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00962919061747463561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749674380302514413.post-53653006410369424402016-03-16T14:32:00.001+00:002016-03-16T14:46:20.219+00:00How to make: Mini paper arrows

use a blob of strong glue (I used Gorilla Glue) to hold the end of the twine in
place before wrapping it round, tying in place and fixing with another small
blob of glue.

There are so many variations of this you could try – paint or
glitter the shaft of the arrow, dip the feathers in paint or glitter, use real
feathers rather than paper (I definitely want to try this), use a mix of
patterns or even incorporate some vellum like I have.

UNTIL NOW! I've backed The Glittery Hands Box on Kickstarter - but Emma, the genius behind the box, needs to make another £700 in the next 7 days if she's going to hit her target and I'm going to get my box (yes, yes, selfish I know). So much craft stuff I see is... well... a bit twee, and this promises not to be, which is why you should definitely back it too! Head over to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/7330696/the-glittery-hands-box to find out more.Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00962919061747463561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749674380302514413.post-40397768742956222222016-02-22T12:47:00.003+00:002016-02-22T13:02:05.499+00:00How to make: A mixed media embroidery hoop

For the basic "page" I used pale blue felt which I stretched into place and then snipped off around the back. I then chose my paper embellishments and layered them on before fixing into place. I used a mixture of 2D and 3D pieces (like the cute bow), and different textures including plain paper, metallic and vellum. I used Gorilla glue to fix the non-see through embellishments in place, and added some tiny brads to help pin everything else to where it should be. Then I added a few neon geometric stickers, which stuck well to the felt. I'm so pleased with how it came out!

But on Tuesday night I was struck by the idea that I wanted to create a card using one of the mini plastic animals I have in my stash (I was working on a separate project which I'll share soon). The result was this geometric elephant card, and I love it! The elephant is stuck on with a blu tac glue spot, so if it was given to a child old enough for it not to be a choking hazard he could be removed and added to a menagerie once the card was finished with. I also added one of my paperclip flags that I made for this how-to.
A bit of paint here, a bit of paper there... add some acetate or some vellum... When I look at Google images for inspiration, a lot of the pictures I see seem a bit (whisper it) old fashioned - hence why I love designers like Heidi Swapp whose collections have a really fresh feel.

I added ephemera from my Heidi Swapp, Maggie Holmes and Docrafts stash and a Docrafts puffy sticker (I LOVE the Docrafts geometric pieces - about as far from stuffy old fashioned scrapbooking styles as you can get). The little peg was just a plain wooden one from Hobbycraft which I painted with my neon pink paint. I plaited some embroidery thread just as a change from using twine. What do you think? Share your links to your latest projects below - I'd love to see them.

I've always really loved the look of those cute flag tags you can buy, but I've also always thought "that's definitely something I could make myself". And I was right! Here's how:

1. I've got lots of neon pink and green paperclips that I bought in pots from Tesco. Foursome of these tags you end up not being able to see the clip at all, so you could just use bog standard silver, but that's not as much fun, right?

2. Cut a piece of patterned paper twice as long as you want your finished flag to be. I used the pre-cut strips from Docrafts geometric neon kit as they happened to be the right width, but if you're cutting your own, make the width just slightly smaller than the size of your paperclip. Slide the strip of paper through the paperclip.

3. Fold the paper in half and glue in place. Hold the two sides together with another paperclip until they're fixed. You'll see that the inside of the paperclip will be pushed back slightly - this is actually good as it will make the flag sit flat against whatever you clip it to.

I have an excess of gift tags! I got a tad (tag?) overexcited this weekend after I got some great stamps free with Docrafts Creativity magazine (a recent but much-loved already discovery) and some super cheap neon pink paint from Tesco. I particularly love the contrast of the neon paint with the brown kraft paper. However it does mean I'll have to give away an awful lot of presents to use them all up.

Hey all, just a very quick post to share with you this gorgeous photos I took of the sunset yesterday - it's lovely to be able to get down to the yard to feed my horse in the evening and it still be light. And look how similar the colours are to Pantone's Colours of the Year! I think Pantone have made a great choice this year - so much so that I've created a Pinterest board in honour of them.Kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00962919061747463561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749674380302514413.post-83681979817137857452016-02-12T15:24:00.000+00:002016-02-16T15:24:36.157+00:00First experiments with stamping

How have I made it so far through my life without doing any stamping? I've been playing around today getting the hang of ink coverage, pressure etc and I love it! These are some very early experiments but I'm super excited about this addition to my crafty skills!
I decided to make a mini album - inspired by Stephanie Bryant's awesome videos I'm going to try to make on a month... we'll see if that's a bit ambitious! But for this album I used Seven Paper's Baxter cat 4x4 album with Heidi Swapp and Maggie Holmes ephemera along with lots of other bits from my stash - I'd much rather play about and put things together myself than follow a prescribed "collection". But of course it's totally up to you how you do your scrapbooks and if you prefer to keep things simple by using collections then that's cool too!

This is my intro page with a tassel made from embroidery thread, a handstamped tag and some cardstock and vellum pieces all mixed up together. The vellum "hello" and "today" are We R Memory Keepers, the cardstock is Heidi Swapp from my stash.

I started my album with some pretty simple photos in page protectors or just loose - the loose ones I backed with patterned paper as you can see on the right of this picture. The overlay on the right is a gorgeous Shimelle one I've had in my stash for ages - I backed two matching pictures with the watercolour paper and used an overlay on both to bookend it.

Are you looking forward to the weekend? We'll be wedding venue hunting tonight and on Sunday which is kind of exciting, and kind of boring (is it allowed to say that?). But in between I'm planning on making some lovely things, inspired by some great blog posts that I've spotted this week and I wanted to share with you:

1. Unsurprisingly this time of year, everything seems geared towards Valentine's Day. Now we don't really "do" V-day in our house, but that didn't stop me grabbing some of the gor-ge-ous neon graphic printed paper I grabbed from The Range last week (I spent waaaaaay too much, I'll have to share pics of my haul with you) and turning it into Lia Griffith's adorable heart-shaped paper aeroplane garland.

2. Again, Vally themed, but you could make these envelope liners for any event, be it a party, baby shower or even just a sweet note to a friend - isn't it nice to receive something lovely through the post? I've been stamping up notecards for just this reason and I'm going to post pics on here soon - in fact, as I write this I realise I should definitely line those envelopes too. Anyway, I like Paper 'n' Stitch because it feels modern and young, and this tutorial put a smile on my face.

3. Oh I desperately NEED to get my sewing machine out again - once the boxes of Christmas decorations are finally off the table and into the loft (I know, I know). Perhaps this cute bomber jacket project from A Pair & A Spare will inspire me to do it this weekend...

4. We were talking at work about how Oh Happy Day is one of our favourite blogs, and I think these cat Valentine favours are super cute - plus they go with my name so, y'know, someone should definitely make me one.
